What to check for to protect your account?

Identity Theft:

It occurs when someone steals personal information such as name, date of birth and Social Security Number(SSN) and uses the same for scam and fraudulent activities.

Warning signs of ID:

  1. Unlawful activity on your bank account or the appearance of new transactions on your credit report.
  2. You obtain unexpected letters and phone calls from debt collection agencies concerning loans or other debts that you do not owe to anyone.
  3. The IRS notifies you that there may be a problem with your tax return or that your return was previously filed with them in your name.
  4. You have been notified that your account has been accessed from a new device that you do not recognise.
  5. You are being charged for medical services that you did not receive or subscribe to.
  6. Bills and bank statements are no longer mailed to you.
  7. You have been denied credit unexpectedly.

How To Reduce Risks of Identity Theft?

Maintain the confidentiality of your personal information.

  • Never share personal information via email, message, or an anonymous phone call.
  • Make the switch to paper-free statements.
  • Shred any documents containing sensitive information, such as your tax filings, your financial records, and/or hospital expenses.
  • Avoid keeping your Social Security number in your pocket and only give it out when absolutely necessary.
  • Do not share passwords on social media, and use privacy settings to keep your personal information private.
  • Discuss internet safety with your children and discourage them from sharing personal info without your authorization.

Keep your devices safe.

  • Your devices should be updated regularly. Maintain the most recent security fixes and apps on all of your devices.
  • Protect your gadgets and domestic Wi-Fi network with a password that is at least 8 characters.
  • Where biometrics are available, enable them such as thumbprint sign-on functionality and retina/facial recognition option.

Maintain control over account access.

  • Make unique passcodes for each of your accounts, never use identical passwords on numerous sites.
  • When signing in to your accounts, use 2-step verification to add an extra layer of protection.
  • Set up account alerts to help you keep track of your financial affairs and keep your accounts secure.
  • Check that your phone number and email address on your financial accounts are up to date.
